Young couple Patty and Drake (Melanie Griffith and Matthew Modine) buy their dream house in San Francisco and rent out the ground floor apartment to Carter Hayes, who seems to be an ideal tenant -- until he stops paying rent, refuses to leave and barricades himself in the apartment. Michael Keaton, in a performance of creepy intensity, plays the sociopathic Carter in this tense nail-biter.
