In the suburban idyll of 1940s America, bachelor Richard Langley joins his friend Harry Allen for a drink, the married businessman confiding that he is having an affair with Kay. Meeting Kay, Richard is immediately entranced and wants her for himself, and also discovers that Harry's wife Pat is having an affair of her own. Harry, fearing that divorce would be an unbearable humiliation for Pat, decides to kill her instead.
