Cop Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) has a death wish, and that makes him a lethal weapon. Distraught over his wife's death, Riggs puts a loaded gun in his mouth. But he can't pull the trigger, so he tries to get bad guys to do it for him by taking risks at every turn. Along for the wild ride is Riggs' buttoned-down partner (Danny Glover).

If these two can learn to stand each other... the bad guys don't stand a chance.
