Superspectacfabstumazingous! I had purchased an 8:00 showing for Kong on Fandango; but, we got to the theater at 7:15 and there was a 7:25 showing that we snuck into because I couldn't sit around and wait another 45 minutes. First let me say something about the length of the film. I realize that 3 hours is a long time to commit to watching a movie, especially with the never-ending trailers and commercials at the beginning of films (don't get me started on those...), and that by having longer films you reduce the number of shows that can be sold; with all that said, when the film is worth it, the people will watch it. Least we forget that Titanic, the largest grossing movie of all time ran 3 hours 14 minutes, and the Lord of the Rings films that Jackson helmed also ran over 3 hours, were huge box office smashes. When a filmmaker as talented as Jackson has proved himself 3 times in a row that he can make a box office and critically acclaimed giant; just sit back, shut up, and enjoy the show. So, that's exactly what I did. The first act of the film that set up the story was engrossing without being too slowly paced; it definitely helped build the anticipation of arriving on Skull Island. I had the feeling like you get when you're on a roller coaster hearing the clinking of metal under your seat as your hoisted higher and higher enjoying the view and soaking it all in before being plummeted into an adrenaline rush of nonstop action and entertainment. Once arriving, or rather, crashing into the island the movie begins it's frenzied journey of inevitability. I couldn't divert my eyes or my attention from the screen for the next 2 hours. I was amazed at the detail and realism of Kong, thanks in big part to the talent of Andy Serkis. Jack Black and Adrien Brody were great in their repected roles; and Naomi Watts was spectacular given that the majority of her scenes required her to communicate without words. What I found most unexpected was that even though I knew what was coming every step of the way, I managed to be surprised at every turn. You can feel the love that Jackson has for this legend with every wonderful moment; and his ability to tell this beloved story to people that already know it and make them love and enjoy it again is a momentous achievement.
