When I first heard that Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal had signed up for an Ang Lee 'gay cowboy' movie, my initial reaction was that of probably most people: "Who would watch something like that?'. As the movie slowly made its way through festivals and began getting excellent reviews, I began reading about it and opened up to the idea a little more. After all, regardless of what your views are on homosexuality, everyone can relate to a story about love; and after all, remember that this is just a movie; it's not some sort of 'gay agenda' film. It's a love story about two people with a love that they can not control regardless of their pasts and current circumstances. As a movie, it was one of the post powerful love stories I have every seen on the screen about these two people's complicated lives who try so desperately to hide their love from everyone around them, and how Heath's character struggles with the his own past and acceptance of his own feelings. Someone who is so closed up emotionally that it show in him physically and in his relationships with his wife and daughters (superbly acted by Ledger). After all is said and done this story is all about the difficulties of relationships that are complicated by external and internal conflicts and accepting yourself before it's too late.
